The "UNDERSTANDING TUBERCULOSIS" workshop facilitator is Paul (Mayho) Thorn, a former health care worker and himself HIV-positive since 1990. In 1995 Paul was infected with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) whilst an in-patient on an HIV-unit at a West London hospital. The outbreak, which killed seven people, occurred due to poor infection control. Paul spent three months in negative pressure isolation, and three years on treatment. He was not expected to survive. After being cured of MDR-TB, Paul wrote the highly-acclaimed Tuberculosis Survival Handbook, first published in 1999, and as a second edition in 2006. An experienced facilitator, Paul designed and implemented workshops to train key front-line workers about TB in the London Borough of Newham, which has the highest incidence of the disease in Western Europe. He is the founder of the Tuberculosis Survival Project, a web-based initiative supporting people with TB and MDR-TB. The site is used in over 100 countries. He is regularly speaks and participates at TB conferences and meetings all around the world.
